GLAUCOMA

Glaucoma is an eye disease in which increased pressure in the eye leads to optic nerve damage. Glaucoma may cause vision loss if left untreated. Our eye exams check for glaucoma by testing intraocular pressure as well as photographing the optic nerve. We also perform comprehensive visual field testing which can confirm loss of vision from optic nerve damage. Patients with a family history of glaucoma are at an increased risk. There are also many medications that may lead to increased eye pressure (such as some medications for asthma, gastrointestinal disease, depression, seizures, as well as any medication containing a steroid), and in these cases eye pressures should be carefully monitored to prevent a secondary glaucoma.
